David Geffen Hall Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts

THE EXPERIENCE

AV&C led the renovation of David Geffen Hall and Karen & Richard LeFrak Lobby , transforming the venue into a space that goes beyond its role as a traditional concert venue and evolving into a public hub where visitors can share ideas, encounter works of art and inspire future generations of performers.

The venue wanted to completely transform its audio and visual experience from initial guest arrival and into the performance space itself. The design and delivery needed to complement the wider experience of a visit to the Lincoln Center and meet the performance needs and goals of the New York Philharmonic.

The LED displays in particular play a key role in the guest arrival sequence. AV&C needed a solution that could meet exacting pixel pitch and resolution requirements, deliver a superior material and image quality with high brightness and great contrast, and power efficient.

They chose SiliconCore as their technology solution for the space because of the company’s local presence, high-performance and sustainable product performance.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Visitor engagement begins with an initial arrival experience of grand or large LED displays blended into the architecture and continues with digital canvases dispersed throughout the spaces. Twenty-two digital touchpoints support placemaking, engagement, curatorial and informational purposes.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by the Hauser Digital Wall, a SiliconCore Camellia 0.95mm LED display located at the back of the lobby. This 50 x 10ft digital wall is available to the public during the day, free to be explored while walking through the lobby or enjoying a coffee.

The content program features a curated series of digital artworks, live multi-camera feeds of performances and rehearsals, event information, and generative ambient media that flows across all the canvases when not otherwise tasked. A motion-tracking camera system is located within the rooms interior, using a high-tech rigging system to allow the camera to operate at a substantial height.

This set-up allows visitors to engage with the responsive generative media without the interruption of any technical equipment operating in full view.

The Karen & Richard LeFrak lobby also hosts two Info Column displays, each portrait displays nearly 3 x 9ft, composed of a SiliconCore Lotus 0.83 high resolution display. The Info Columns can be programmed to display their own content or choreographed to act in concert with the digital wall.

The Welcome Center features a 48 x 6 ft SiliconCore 1.2mm Lavender LED display with a 90-degree return. The exterior-facing surface engages with pedestrians at street level, while the interior-facing surface welcomes guests and supports box office activities.

AV&C utilized SiliconCore displays to deliver an experience that brings digital landmarks to the physical world, showcasing best practice, creativity and delivering an experience that gives a platform to the New York arts community.

The displays were chosen for their high resolution, deep contrast, and detailed graphics, made possible with SiliconCore’s proprietary technologies. Its Common Cathode Technology greatly reduces the power consumption which was considered as a factor for increasing the lifetime of the product as well as long-term sustainability.

SiliconCore’s proprietary and patented technology made possible the implementation of LED displays of this scale and this specific use case. All displays feature SiliconCore’s Common Cathode driver technology. This powers individual LEDs in a more efficient way by controlling the power voltages to eliminate heat waste, enabling sustainable performance, and protecting their long-term investment.

This results in 20-50% cooler operating temperatures and lower power consumption than the market average, leading to a longer LED lifespan of over 100,000 hours, power reduction for sustainability benefits, lower operating costs, and no need for HVAC equipment.

SiliconCore’s proprietary encapsulation technology, LISA, enhances the durability of the display by protecting at display surface. This increased robustness is ideal for displays placed in public locations, protecting them from any knocks and damages.

SiliconCore’s display technology makes possible the unique placement of the Box Office display, which has a portion as a window display while the rest flanks around to form the internal display. The display’s viewing angle and color uniformity ensure the same tiles can seamlessly flow from a high ambient window environment to those within  the building.
