SiliconCore, Girraphic, and Mo-Sys present a virtual production showcase at NAB 2024
LED display manufacturer SiliconCore, dedicated broadcast design agency Girraphic and pioneers of the most accurate camera tracking solutions Mo-Sys are partnering at NAB 2024 to deliver an immersive, three-sided LED volume showcasing applications for augmented and virtual reality backdrops.
This will be constructed using SiliconCore’s 1.9mm XR LED Display to create two walls and a matching surface area floor. This fine pixel pitch display features proprietary technologies from SiliconCore that ensures superior performance, including refresh rates of 240hz and increased durability through its LISA encapsulation technology, so the same display can also be used on the studio floor and wall to create the highest resolution immersive production spaces currently feasible. The smooth non-reflective, durable, flat, water-resistant surface can handle weight-bearing loads of up to 1000kg / 200lbs per square foot.
The content created by Girraphic will allow visitors to the booth to assume the role of the actor or presenter and step inside the environments to experience multiple XR scenes and backdrops, and view this from the perspective of the director by seeing the scene through the lens of a RED Komodo camera. The camera will be supported by trusted industry camera accessory provider, Miller tripod and the lighting design will be provided by BB & S Lighting.
Girraphic has created a variety of scenes for virtual production that encompass ultra realistic environments including a sports stadium, Times Square, and a high-octane race day.
Talent will be tracked in the virtual space using the Mo-Sys StarTracker Max optical camera tracking system. The new, lightweight, and miniaturized StarTracker Max leverages improved hardware and algorithms to produce Mo-Sys’ most accurate tracking solution to date.
StarTracker Max enables fast camera movement to keep talent perfectly framed while maintaining accurate AR and VR asset positioning. A wider field of view and optical tracking through +/- 180-degrees of angular tilt and roll offers maximum freedom of movement and stars are placed on the walls and floor to maintain tracking.
Once calibrated StarTracker Max works without requiring an operator, and a useful visual indicator confirms tracking status when a monitor is not used.
SiliconCore’s 0.83mm LED Display will be the confidence monitor, showing the live feed in real-time at 4K resolution powered by 7th Sense servers.
Glenn Bailey, VP at SiliconCore explains:
“As the only LED manufacturer designing our own driver chips, we are uniquely positioned to maximize the efficiency and performance of each pixel. The high brightness, high contrast, 160-degree viewing angle, coupled with cool operating temperatures, lead to a longer lifespan for optimal ROI in production environments where operating cost is crucial.”
Aiden Wilson Virtual Production Lead at Girraphic says:
“We are constantly looking to improve our clients broadcast experience by working closely with our product vendors’ research, development, and support teams. Working with SiliconCore who is at the forefront of LED display design and development ensures we also continue to evolve our design techniques and processes, ensuring we stay ahead of the ever-evolving broadcast landscape.
“Through this project, we have developed new ways to tackle world building resulting in a breakthrough in how the industry can approach world building for virtual production. We hope you enjoy the results!”
Michael Geissler, CEO of Mo-Sys comments:
“Our market leading innovations provide the highest level of tracking accuracy for the next generation of virtual productions. Within the LED volume, StarTracker Max connects the real and the virtual worlds, but in addition to that, it can also facilitate set extensions and natural scene spill. This is the game changer in making virtual production more accessible and mainstream. we look forward to showing this in action at NAB.”
